Day Two 5-Step Nanny Application Series 'First Impressions Count!'

With the return of London Fashion Week and an Autumnal wardrobe update, we felt that it was only appropriate for our next article to be based on correct interview attire, presentable profile photographs and positive first impressions! Regardless whether fashion’s your thing; first impressions count and your interview outfit can impact the decision by a client (and agency!) to ask you back or offer the role.

Coming across the right way..

CV Photograph/Profile Photograph:

With your CV now finalised, glowing references and all required documentation submitted – a recent profile photograph is a great optional extra for your portfolio. A candidate photo is helpful for everyone, for both agencies as well as clients, and is important to consider the photograph as an extension of the CV. A well-presented photograph in a ‘relaxed passport’ style that makes you feel good and confident is always welcome. We would also advise a photograph of just you with an appropriate backdrop – please refrain from posed ‘selfies’, bathroom background or piled laundry in view!

Facebook Screening:

Most of us are guilty of indulging in an occasional spot of Facebook “research.” It’s hard to resist the temptation to peek at the virtual lives of others, casting judgement over their profiles and activity. However, it is worth noting that ‘social’ networking, isn’t simply JUST social. Many employers will check social networking sites as a way of screening potential employees and the image projected by their online activity. With a wealth of personal information at potential employers’ finger tips, we highly advise discretion and privacy when using Facebook and other sites. You might think you are keeping things private – but your ‘friends’ might not be so conscientious. NEVER ever post information about your previous or current employers/charges, interviews etc.. as this is not only totally unprofessional but can be self-defamatory.

As much as employers need to be wary of viewing photos with an over-critical eye and taking posts out of context, we do advise our Nannies to adopt a more conscientious approach towards social media with an appropriate profile photograph.

Dress to Impress…

First impressions count:

Never underestimate the importance of a favourable first impression! A ‘first impression’ by definition is instant, with a positive or negative opinion formulated quickly, often based on your appearance alone. The substance of your interview is, of course, paramount but arguably your interview attire and personal presentation are also vital in dictating the final outcome.

Regardless of whether attending a trial, video/skype call or an interview in-person ALWAYS appear smartly dressed, as a way of demonstrating how seriously you are taking the opportunity. Despite a video or Skype interview not being face-to-face you should still dress exactly as you would for a physical encounter, with a suitable backdrop and any mess or inappropriate objects removed from view. Similarly when trialling, we still would advise either a well-presented interview outfit with some practical clothes to change into or a smart, yet comfortable non-restrictive outfit. A smart pair of trousers, with a shirt or plain blouse is by far the safest option - no trainers, flip-flops, leggings, T-shirts or scruffy jeans.

With Autumn/Winter weather now set in, please be considerate when invited into someone else’s home. If caught in the rain upon arrival, make sure to shake your umbrella OUTSIDE before entering, and if not advised, ask where to place a wet brolly/coat. Be courteous and respectful if clients have a ‘no shoes rule’ – arrive in shoes that can be slipped on/off easily and make sure your socks are clean without holes. Never bare feet.

Lastly, dressing well can increase your confidence as well as creating a strong professional image. If you look great, you’ll feel great and if you feel great, there will be a higher chance of your interview going well. Don’t let something so simple as unpolished shoes, unkempt nails or too much make-up/perfume cost you the job!

Get off to a Good Start!

First 90 seconds:

So, you may look the part BUT do you sound the part? Research suggests that a potential employer can form a decision within the first 1-2 minutes into an interview, through snap judgements cast by your initial communication and appearance. These first impressions and early assumptions are prompted by three important factors: how personable you are, how easy you would be to work with, and by the way you appear/dress. Always start by addressing the client as “Mr” or “Mrs” unless they introduce themselves otherwise, and a firm handshake, looking them in the eye! Never bring any angst to the interview; factor in more time and locate a coffee shop nearby, to help reduce travelling anxiety or pre-interview nerves.

It’s easy to forget than an interview is a two way thing – listen to the clients! Pace yourself and don’t be afraid to pause or acknowledge that you may need a few moments for consideration. By slowing down slightly you may feel more confident and come across more measured in response. Speak clearly and at a volume that matches the interview, whilst making good eye contact. Avoid nervous fidgeting, nail biting or talking too quickly. Remember heads up! Shoulders back and a friendly smile!
