The Importance of Being Exercised

bike In our fast-paced, technologically enthused and culinary diverse society, we are presented with more challenges when it comes to keeping our little people active, healthy and fit. Whilst some children love to run around and play outside, others try to avoid it at all costs and require a little more motivation. So, why is exercise so important and how do you encourage little ones to get involved.

Physical, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing:

It is a fact that exercising helps people to cope with the stresses of everyday life, resulting in happier and healthier people. For children, this is exactly the same and taking part in daily exercise will allow them to run off the worries of the moment, leaving them with a clear head to consider how best to approach the new and challenging situations they face.

Children are often little balls of energy and using this energy in a positive and active way could help them as they continue to develop into teenagers. By running off all of the excess emotional energy or cycling off the frustration that can often build up in little ones, they will develop positive routines and will begin to feel the benefits of exercise in no time.

As obesity rates are still a concern in young people, creating positive habits around exercise will instil values that motivate children to leave the sofa, turn off the games console, put down the crisps and go and have some fun. Not only will exercise benefit their physical health but it could contribute to them becoming more patient, courageous and determined individuals.

Getting involved:

For some, playing football or with a Frisbee is great fun; a trip to the park is brilliant and leaving is when the upset kicks in. For others, there is fear and loathing at the thought of putting on some trainers and soaking up some vitamin D in the outdoors. If your charge enjoys getting active, it is up to you to continue to encourage this and provide opportunities to try new sports and join some teams or clubs. If you struggle to motivate your little one, you will have to try some alternative methods:

Walk or cycle to school, playgroup, to the shops – as much as you can so that this becomes the norm.
Join forces with other nannies/friends with children and have active days for all.
Have competitions with prizes – these do not have to be for the winner but could be for a range of skills.
Be a good role model – make sure you exercise and do this with them if it helps.

For babies – baby yoga, massage and soft play is a great start.

Developing positive habits around exercise will have a huge impact on your charge. Remember that this is only half of the battle – diet is equally as important and should be carefully considered.

Help your charge to develop positive strategies to cope with life; see how they grow in confidence with new things and help them to enjoy exercise and the benefits it brings.
